Paper Warriors (2025) - Animation Layer-Driven Foliage Rig System
Foliage System Breakdown
Tree Rig
Responsible for all foliage set dressing, animation layer Foliage Rig System R&D, Dynamic Foliage Tree Rig, shot animation. Shot lighting & compositing by Alaina Tuttle
In Paper Warriors, we wanted to avoid hopping between different programs and/or simulation for an effect that needs to be constantly updated and specifically animated to emphasize big character movements.
The Animation-Layer effector system is found on the tree and bamboo assets. All plant assets are set dressed with a base animation that is adjusted per-shot if an intense wind occurs in the scene.
Our film's foliage that ends up within few meters from the characters are sectioned off into chunks (see Foliage System Breakdown). There is a fully featured rig version of each set as well as a geometry version of each set with no rigs or deformers.
If characters are close to a set or directly interact with it, the rig version of the set is used in the shot, while plants that are far away yet still in view or cast shadows use the geometry version of the set. To aid in set dressing, a library of arranged plants in clumps were created.

Paper Warriors (2025) - Visual Style & Pipeline Documentation
On Paper Warriors, it was extremely important that we communicated our intended visual look for our stylized rock, paper, scissors world.
Sarah Bush, Emily Lao, and I worked on creating a Color & Look reference that artists could utilize.
Jaliyah Francois and I worked on a full lighting and rendering pipeline, outlining which tasks should be done by which team.
Paper Warriors (2025) - End Credits Sequence
Nearing the end of production on Paper Warriors, I worked on the end credits.
Inspired by paper theatres, the sequence displays the two main characters grabbing pieces of the destroyed dojo following the events of the film between credits.
In the end, the dojo is rebuilt.
